Notes from Yarina School 1949-1962
The following comes from the 40th Anniversary Photo Directory, S.I.L. in Peru, 1986,
pages 19-20.
1949
Yarinacocha school began in homes with several children already started with Calvert courses. First
classroom built in summer.
1953
Second school classroom was built, First edition of Jungle Calls.
Peter Hocking's valedictorian address included: "I have always desired to have a person in the same
grade as I."
1954
Third classroom added; total students: 38.
1956
Gene Smith spent 8 years in 8th grade before he was finally promoted to high school. He was then
sent to the principal's office where he spent the rest of his time at Yarina.
Nursery was started because the working mothers felt they could do more and better work if they
knew their children were under supervision.
1962
Teachers became MR. & MRS..no more AUNT & UNCLE in the school system.
Quote from address by Uncle Cam at graduation: "Before there were schools, children learned
from the example of their parents. Example is still the best teacher. From the ranks of the children of
missionaries have been found to come a larger proportion of people who make "Who's Who" than
from any other profession....The clue we believe is found in the truth of Isaiah 54:13, "All thy
children shall be taught of the Lord....'"
