The Yarinacocha School 50 Year memorial book was published in the summer of 1999. The book contains a very interesting 40+ page history of the school written by Karen Thiesen Keagy. Dear Yarina alumni,
Can you believe that this coming school year will be the LAST school year for the school at Yarinacocha? It will be almost exactly 50 year that the school has been in existence. While it is truly sad to see a part of our lives "disappear forever," we can rejoice in God's provision of and for that school over the last 50 years! We in the CHED department and some of your fellow alumni do not want the significance of this event to slip away unnoticed. Rather than mourn the passing of the school (and center), we would like to focus on God's goodness and faithfulness for the last 50 years.
Would you help us? We would like to collect information regarding the alumni students and staff since 1949. If you have access to the Internet, you can give us your information. You can do this through Paul Gibson's web page:
If you know of others, we would appreciate that information too. We would like to know where people are, when they were at Yarina and what they are doing now. Also, we want to develop some kind of a memory book or memory CD. We would like to collect some of your best stories of things that happened at Yarina - serious and funny. Write up your favorite memories for us all to enjoy. We would like you to tell us what the school at Yarina meant to you. We would like to collect some pictures. Please don't send us a whole box! Pick out the best. If you send pictures, please write on the back information concerning who and when also write your name and address so we can return them. If you are concerned that you might lose the picture, you might be able to go to Kinko's (or a similar place) and have the picture scanned. We would prefer scanned pictures on a disk (TIFF format for Macs would be good, but we could probably work with others) with a document describing the pictures - who, when, where. If you have poems or songs, they would be good. If you have some good video footage, send us a copy, we may be able to do something with it. Have I missed anything?
Finally, we want to set up some committees. We want one for Huntington Beach, Dallas, Waxhaw and Peru. We would like to sponsor reunions on Peruvian Independence Day, 1999. We want these to be time of celebrating God's goodness and enjoying the memories! We would like to video tape these so they can be shared with others. Perhaps highlights would be put on a CD or video tape. We are still thinking through these ideas. If you would like to be on a committee, please let me know. If a group of you want to form a committee, that would be great, or I can help set them up.
I am really excited about the potential of this celebration. It can really put a positive slant on the sorrow that will be experienced. I think it can also be a real tool for helping families considering assignments or teachers interested in teaching MKs. Tell us what you think! Let's do this together!
