Compared to the United States, Peru has very colorful money. Peru also uses techniques to prevent counterfeiting; in the late1970's, Peru started putting a watermark on the bills. The large white area on these bills is the watermark (which the scanner did not pick up) containing the picture of the person on the right side of the bill. Peru also uses intricate engraving and sizes. Starting in the mid- to late-1980's, Peru also started using metal threads on the bills to help prevent counterfeiting.
Unlike the United States, the picture of the person on the bill is not necessarily a President, but each person is someone famous from Peru's history. The picture on the back of each bill is a typical scene from Peruvian culture.
Due to inflation, Peru has had three monetary system (that I know of). The first one is the Sol, abbreviated as S/. Sol. is the Spanish word for Sun, and all of the bills (that I have) say Soles de Oro (Suns of Gold). In the mid-1980's Peru changed to the Inti (I/.) system. Inti is the Quechua word for Sun; the Quechuas live in the Andes Mountains and are the descendents of the Incas. One Inti equals 1,000 Soles. None of the Inti bills (that I have) say Intis de Oro. In 1991 Peru changed their monetary system again. This time it's called Nuevos Sol, or New Sun. One Nueva Sol equals 1,000,000 Intis or 1,000,000,000 Soles. I do not have any of the Nuevos Sol bills.
I scanned in the bills that I have. Some of the bills are in poor condition so they didn't scan in very well. On other bills the colors do not look quite like the origionals, but I did try to get the colors to display relatively close to what they should be. Beside each bill I put the denomination and the date that paticular bill was printed. I have the front of the bill with the back below it.
